Definiens Enterprise Image Intelligence™ Suite

Image Analysis in Earth Sciences

Every day, remote sensing provides thousands of images from a huge variety of sensors – from simple black and white photographs to hyperspectral imagery with hundreds of channels. The images range in scale from hundreds of square miles for monitoring large areas of land and sea to high resolution images of individual objects.

Standardized image analysis and information extraction are essential to compare results across geographic areas and support political directives like the Kyoto Protocol, sustainable management of natural resources and future-proof infrastructure planning. Similarly, in natural disasters and other emergencies, image analysis can rapidly provide maps of remote territory to assist emergency operations, save lives, reduce costs and support insurance and reinsurance services.

Attempts to automate image analysis and information extraction have been continuing for decades. But despite increases in computational power and imaging capabilities, fundamental advances in automated image analysis have been limited. Looking at a satellite image, it is easy, even for an untrained eye, to distinguish a river from a lake. But traditional automated image classification tools often fail to recognize features that are obvious to any person because they only use information contained within individual pixels and their immediate neighbors.

From the perspective of an image analyst, there is so much more to an image than the color and intensity of pixels. There is shape, texture, area, scale and the relationships of the objects, all attributes which analysts use to understand the content of an image and data set.
If you are involved with satellite image classification in any way then Definiens Enterprise Image Intelligence™ is the right software for you.

Now Available!

We are delighted to announce the availability of Definiens Enterprise Image Intelligence™ Suite v7.0.8 as of November 10th 2008.

About v7.0.8

Definiens Enterprise Image Intelligence™ Suite 7.0.8 is a recommended maintenance release. Customers with previous 7.0.x installations are recommended to upgrade to this release for their production use. New customers are also advised to take this latest release.

Rollout

Starting November 10 th 2008, the software version 7.0.8 will be actively rolled out to all users who hold a valid maintenance contract. They will receive an email detailing the benefits of this maintenance version and will be provided with access to the download area for this release.

Customers who do not hold a valid maintenance contract will be informed of this new release and encouraged to renew their maintenance. Details can be obtained through support@pcigeomatics.com.

7.0.8 Highlights

The key benefits of this release include:

  • Users can now better define the attribute table content for shape file exports.
  • Several known bugs and limitations for shape file export have been removed.
  • The raster library GDAL was updated from version 1.1 to 1.5, resulting in improved support for raster data.
  • Definiens Grid operation and stability were improved.
  • Installation procedures were improved and license borrowing issues were resolved.
  • A large number of bugs and limitations were removed.

A complete list of bug fixes and new features can be found in the attached release notes. You are strongly encouraged to read the release notes provided with the download. These release notes contain detailed information on new features, problems fixed by the release, and any known limitations.

Highlights at a glance

  • Offering powerful data and information fusion options for many types of images and vector data, enabling users to extract the most valuable and reliable information.
  • With multi-resolution image segmentation providing a hierarchical network of image objects, users get a multi-scale, real-world view.
  • Delivers outstanding performance for panchromatic, multi/hyper-spectral imagery, lidar, infrared, and polarimetric SAR data from space-borne and airborne imaging platforms.
  • Rule-based image analysis allows users to readily incorporate expert knowledge
  • Semantic class hierarchies and relationships use remote sensing and GI nomenclature to tremendously simplify modeling efforts.
  • Fuzzy classification functionality emulates data sources and analysis models' inherent uncertainties, thereby enhancing accuracy assessment.
  • Standard input and output formats ensure seamless workflows when extracting information from remotely sensed data, as well as GIS-ready results.
  • Equipped with new tools especially for customers in the earth science field. These tools provide a simple to use workflow, enabling common problems to be solved with no programming.
